Georgia Rallies From 17 Down, Tops Georgia Tech In 8OT Shootout
The game was a seesaw affair from the start, with both teams exchanging touchdowns throughout regulation and the first overtime. Georgia Tech held a 21-14 lead midway through the third quarter, but Georgia responded with back-to-back touchdowns to take a 28-21 advantage.
However, the Yellow Jackets rallied with two touchdowns of their own in the fourth quarter and early overtime to force the game into extra innings.
Both defenses were outstanding in the overtime sessions, with each team forcing multiple turnovers. Georgia's defense came up with four interceptions in overtime, including two by Kelee Ringo and one by Christopher Smith.
Georgia Tech's defense also had a strong showing, intercepting quarterback Stetson Bennett twice in overtime and forcing two fumbles.
With the game tied 34-34 in the eighth overtime, Georgia kicker Jared Zirkel nailed a 26-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs the lead. Georgia Tech had a chance to tie the game on the ensuing possession, but kicker Brent Cimaglia missed a 31-yard attempt to seal the Bulldogs' victory.
"This was a great win for our team," said Georgia coach Kirby Smart. "We showed a lot of resilience and determination to come back from that deficit. I'm proud of our guys."
Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins praised his team's effort but lamented the missed opportunities. "We had our chances to win this game," he said. "But Georgia made the plays when they needed to."
The win improves Georgia's record to 5-0 this season, while Georgia Tech falls to 3-3. The Bulldogs will face Auburn next week in a key SEC East matchup, while the Yellow Jackets will take on North Carolina.
