Dallas Cowboys Finally Move On From Jason Garrett As Coach
After nine seasons as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Jason Garrett has been relieved of his duties, the team announced Sunday. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2019 season.
Years of Frustration Culminate in Garrett's Departure
Garrett's tenure in Dallas was marked by both successes and failures. He led the Cowboys to three NFC East championships and two playoff appearances, but the team never advanced past the divisional round under his leadership. In 2019, the Cowboys finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
"We appreciate everything Jason has done for this organization," said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. "He is a true professional and has been a valuable asset to this team. However, we believe that it is time for a change in leadership."
Marinelli to Take Over Temporarily
Rod Marinelli, who has been the Cowboys' defensive coordinator since 2014, will take over as interim head coach. Marinelli has a long history of success in the NFL, having previously served as head coach of the Detroit Lions for five seasons.
"I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this team," said Marinelli. "We have a lot of talent on this roster, and I am confident that we can turn things around."
Cowboys Begin Search for Permanent Head Coach
The Cowboys are expected to begin searching for a permanent head coach immediately. Several potential candidates have already been identified, including former NFL head coaches Mike McCarthy and Jim Caldwell.
"We are committed to finding the best possible coach for this team," said Jones. "We believe that we can contend for a Super Bowl, and we are confident that we can find the right coach to lead us there."
